چکیده

We present results of an age and metallicity gradient analysis inferred from both optical and near-infrared surface photometry. The analysis is based on a sample of 36 nearby early-type galaxies, obtained from the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Surface brightness profiles were derived in each band, and used to study the color gradients of the galaxies. Using simple stellar population models with both optical and near infrared colors, we may interpret the color gradients in term of age and metallicity gradients of galaxies. Using gZ ≡ d logZmet/d logR and gA = d logAge/d logR to represent the metallicity and age gradients, we found a median value of gZ = −0.25 ± 0.03 for the metallicity gradient, with a dispersion σgZ = 0.19± 0.02. The corresponding values for the age gradients were gA = 0.02 ± 0.04 and σgA = 0.25 ± 0.03. These results are in good agreement with recent observational results, as well as with recent simulations that suggest both monolithic collapse and major mergers have played important roles in the formation of early-type galaxies. Our results demonstrate the potential of using multi-waveband colors obtained from current and future optical and infrared surveys in constraining the age and metallicity gradients of early-type galaxies. Optical and infrared color distributions in nearby early-type galaxies and the implied age and metallicity gradients

We analyze the optical and near-infrared (NIR) surface photometries for a sample of 36 nearby early-type galaxies based on the eight broad-band images obtained from the Early Data Release (EDR) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). The surface brightness profiles of most galaxies can be well fitted by the de Vaucouleur law, and the effective radius de...

Optical − Nir Color Gradients in Early Type Galaxies at Z . 1 . 0 1

Recent studies based on line indices of nearby early-type galaxies suggest that stars in the galaxies’ inner part may be younger and more metal rich than stars in the outer part. If confirmed, the finding has a profound implication for the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies, since such age gradients naturally arise if merging played an important role in their formation/evolution. As...

Iv. Using Color Profiles to Study Stellar and Dust Content of Galaxies

The stellar and dust content of spiral galaxies as function of radius has been investigated using nearinfrared and optical broadband surface photometry of 86 face-on spiral galaxies. Colors of galaxies correlate with the azimuthally averaged local surface brightness both within and among galaxies, with the lower surface brightness regions being bluer. The colors formed from different passband c...

Optical and Near - Infrared Structural Properties of Cluster Galaxies at z ∼ 0

Structural parameters (half-light radius r e , mean effective surface brightness µ e , and Sersic index n, parameterizing the light profile shape) are derived for a sample of galaxies in the rich cluster AC 118 at z = 0.31: so far the largest (N=93) sample of galaxies at intermediate-redshift with structural parameters measured in the near-infrared. The parameters are obtained in two optical wa...

Radial Variation of Optical and Near - Infrared Colours in Luminous Early - Type Galaxies in ABELL 2199

We performed K band surface photometry for luminous early-type galaxies in a nearby rich cluster ABELL 2199. Combining it with B and R band surface photometry, radial variations of B − R and R −K colours in the galaxies were investigated. It is found that the inner regions of the galaxies are redder in both of B − R and R −K colours. Comparing the radial variations of both of the colours with p...
